2026 Rajasthan Day

2026 Rajasthan Day

The state of Rajasthan was formed on the 30th of March in the year 1949, and since then, this day has been celebrated as the Rajasthan Day or the Foundation Day of Rajasthan. This year marks the 77th anniversary of this state’s formation!

The state of Rajasthan has a very rich history. Before India became independent in 1947, this region was known as Rajputana. This region comprised various princely states. Some of the areas came under the British Empire, and the Marathas also had control over certain areas of this region.

The formation of the largest state of India, namely Rajasthan, took place in seven phases. The unification of the princely states took place in the year 1948 with the formation of the Matsya Union. This union comprised small princely states like Alwar, Bharatpur, Dhaulpur, and Karauli. Within the span of seven years, this state came into existence.

The name of this state, meaning “Land of the Kings”, reflects the fact that it was ruled by various kings before the independence of India. Jaipur was the largest city of this state; hence, it was named the capital of this state.

Rajasthan is a very important part of India due to its diverse culture, rich heritage and beautiful forts. Often referred to as the ‘Desert State of India’, it is covered mainly by the Thar Desert. With its iconic cities like Bikaner, Jaisalmer, and Jodhpur, consisting of long stretches of golden sand, it is truly a marvellous region of India! This day is therefore celebrated with great joy and fervour, as it marks when India acquired its largest state.
